Washington, known for its long history and iconic government buildings, is also covered in gorgeous gardens and parks where you can immerse yourself in nature, take a romantic picnic, or explore interactive gardens that provide fun for all the family. And with the National Museum of American History in Washington launching a year-long “Cultivating America’s Gardens” exhibition in the summer of 2017 there is no better time to experience the city’s glorious green spaces. Here we take you through our top 5 parks and gardens in the city. When you are ready to go, contact Brightsun Travel about our exclusive Washington cheap flights offers.

Smithsonian Gardens
At the Smithsonian Gardens you can explore 13 gardens spread over 9 acres surrounding the Smithsonian museums, which are full of magnolia, evergreen and exotic trees, many imported from countries around the world. More than just gardens, the centre often holds summer open evenings with food and drink on offer.

United States Botanic Garden
The United States Botanic Garden is a city highlight, where you can learn about growing plans, and explore diverse individual gardens, including jungle and desert paradises in its central Conservatory, plus gardens that provide sanctuary to some of the world’s rarest plants. Or, for a great day out for all the family, you could head to the busy butterfly gardens.

Dumbarton Oaks Gardens
Dumbarton Oaks Gardens are historic gardens in Washington featuring a South Lawn, Orangery and Green Garden, where you can enjoy picnics among ancient oak trees and relax on terraces offering spectacular views of the city. The gardens underwent a renovation programme in 2017, and are set to reopen in early 2018, offering a perfect oasis in the city.

Hillwood Gardens
The Hillwood Estate, Museum and Gardens complex in Washington features a museum in its central mansion, and 13 acres of formal gardens to explore, including rose gardens and year-round seasonal gardens. The estate also hosts regular events, including family picnics, classical concerts and fun dress-up days for children.

Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens
Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens, the only aquatic garden preserved by the National Park Service in the US, offers garden walks and bird watching walks led by a park ranger daily, plus a ‘Junior Ranger Programme’ offering fun tours for children. In the summer the park hosts a yearly Lotus and Water Lily Festival and runs regular ‘Paddle Nights’ where you can explore the gardens by canoe.
