How to make the most of Honolulu

Honolulu is the capital of Hawaii, located on the island of Oahu. Waimea Bay
Travel an hour north from Honolulu and watch surfers catching some of the biggest waves on the island at Waimea Bay. Waimea Bay is where some of the most famous international surf contests in the world are held every year. Of course, you can get a surf lessons with a pro here and experience the waves for yourself.

Waimea Valley
Honolulu is also surrounded by mountains and forests, such as Waimea Valley, just under an hour’s drive from the capital, with gardens, forest trails and sacred native Hawaiian archaeological sites to explore. You can take easy hikes that take you past breathtaking waterfalls, and steep hikes that will get your blood pumping, and reward you with incredible ocean views.

Kailua
Travel east through valleys and villages and you’ll reach the small town of Kailua, where you will find restaurants and shopping strips, and, of course, some of the best beaches on Oahu. The pick of the beaches here is Kailua Beach Park and Lanikai Beach that offer white sands and access to hikes that are suitable for all the family, such as Kaiwa Ridge Trail.

Pearl Harbor
One of Pearl Harbor’s most significant sites is the USS Arizona Memorial, created in memory of the Pearl Harbor attack of World War II, and built over a shipwreck out at sea. Here you can see the remains of the ship from the monument, and watch short films about the attack. Thousands of visitors tour the site daily, so book ahead for a free boat tour to the shrine, put on daily.

Ko?olau Range & Diamond Head
Surrounding Honolulu are the misty mountains of the Ko’olau Range, where you can hike through forests, and bag yourself some of the best views on the island. Or, you could hike over 750 feet up the extinct crater of Diamond Head and enjoy amazing views of Hawaii from its crater rim. Go inside and there are great picnic areas and informative historical displays.
